Coolquah has a taxi theory:

How this translates to my situation? - I may be very far behind my peers and even juniors at the moment, but instead I may gain something more if I don't give up and march steadily forward?

hmm, i think everyone wants something different out of life.
Some want to get ahead and so would have to "drive faster". Others want to enjoy the journey and thus will drive more slowly. It's really about your priorities and what you want. What i get from this analogy is, one can't beat the red light and get passengers at the same time, so u hv to choose? :)
